RIO DE JANEIRO >> Matthew Centrowitz, gold medal around his neck, was still trying to find his bearings at the dizzying height of the top step on the Olympic Stadium medal podium Saturday night when he was approached by Lord Sebastian Coe.
Coe, the president of the track and field’s global goveing body and two-time Olympic 1,500-meter champion, was presenting gifts to the medalists as part of the medal ceremony.
As the pair shook hands, Coe smiled and leaned close to Centrowitz.
“Welcome to the club,” Coe said.

NEW YORK >> American swimmer Ryan Lochte said he over-exaggerated what happened at a Rio de Janeiro gas station and acknowledged it was his “immature behavior” that got him and three teammates into a mess that consumed the final days of the Olympics.
Lochte, in a portion of an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer that aired Saturday, continued backtracking from a story that he initially described as an armed robbery. Police have said the swimmers vandalized a bathroom after a night of partying and armed guards confronted them and asked them to pay for the damage.
“It’s how you want to make it look like,” Lochte said. “Whether you call it a robbery or whether you call it extortion or us just paying for the damages, we don’t know. All we know is that there was a gun pointed in our direction and we were demanded to give money.”

Michael Cacciotti walked the dimensions of the concrete Wilson Reservoir in the blazing sun, pleased to find almost no shade and triple digit temperatures.

The project, which attracted a visit from Gov. Jerry Brown nearly three years ago, has been called a renovation effort but may be more accurately described as a construction project.
When the goveor stopped by in December 2013, the Carson Street venue was known as Hawaiian Gardens Casino, where players sat at card tables beneath a giant white tent.
At the time, the renovation project was expected to cost $45 million. Casino general manager Ron Sarabi said during a Friday tour of the venue the scope of the project got bigger and bigger as work went on.

Kathy Creighton was 16 when she landed what was her first summer job: squeezing oranges and working the cash register at the Orange Julius in San Pedro’s bustling Ports O’ Call Village.
“We had these very ugly brown and yellow, itchy polyester uniforms we had to wear,” Creighton said. “We went home sticky and stinky.”
But there were perks.
The popular juice-and-burger spot was situated in a building constructed over the water, with wall-size windows on three sides.

Three additional arrests were made this week in the evacuation areas of the Blue Cut fire, according to the San Beardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies arrested three people Thursday on suspicion of trying to steal a flatbed truck from an area evacuated.

With nearly 35,000 homes evacuated due to the fire, 70 deputies, two per unit, have been assigned to patrol the areas, according to a news release Saturday moing.

ST. AMANT, La. >> Louisiana continues to dig itself out from devastating floods, with search parties going door to door looking for survivors or bodies trapped by flooding so powerful in some cases it disturbed the dead and sent caskets floating from cemeteries.
At least 13 people died in the flooding that swept through parts of southe Louisiana after torrential rains lashed the region. While the waters have slowly receded in many areas, the hard work of rebuilding lives is just ramping up, with people cleaning out their homes while others struggle to find a place to stay.
In a uniquely Louisiana problem, some families are also trying to rebury relatives whose caskets were unearthed by the floods.

The Long Beach Ministers Alliance is sponsoring a comedy show, hoping that laughter will help heal problems in the community.
“Laughing Lives Matter,” a benefit comedy show, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Terrace Theater.
Lester Barrie, inspirational comedian and former Comic View host, will be host the show, featuring Doug Williams, Gilbert Esquivel, Ron Pearson and Michael Colyar with special guests Ricky Harris, Lamont Bonman and Angel Gainse.
“Laughing Lives Matter is a clean comedy show designed to support our efforts and partnerships to interrupt community violence and human trafficking, as well as support homeless veterans and stimulate job development,” said Pastor Gregory Sanders of the Alliance.

RIO DE JANEIRO >> In the shadow of mighty Usain Bolt, Allyson Felix achieved something unprecedented in women’s track and field Friday by wiing her fifth Olympic gold medal.
And together with the rest of the 4x100-meter relay team, she brought the United States closer to its biggest medal haul in decades. The tally could have been higher, too, had the U.S. men’s 4x100 team not been disqualified after finishing third in the subsequent final.
The women’s team was smooth, despite the rocky path to the final. Ruing the second leg in the relay, Felix kept the U.S. up there with the mighty Jamaicans, before English Gardner and Tori Bowie brought the baton, tightly clenched in their hands, home for gold.
Felix had been bumped in the preliminary heats and lost the baton, but the U.S. team protested and got a second chance — a solo re-run that allowed them to qualify on times.

Rams fans retu to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Saturday, where they’ll see their team play the Kansas City Chiefs on the field.
What they don’t want to see are fights off the field and in the stands.
That’s why officials this week assured fans that security is priority No. 1 at the Coliseum after last week’s preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
The long-awaited game ended in a victory for the home team, but three people were arrested and seven were ejected from the stands after some tempers flared. Eleven ambulances also were requested, but only one person had to be taken to the hospital, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A 21-year-old Reno woman spending her first day in Los Angeles plunged to her death Friday from a cliff at Point Fermin in San Pedro, police said.
The accident occurred about 2:15 p.m. in the 500 block of West Paseo del Mar.
The woman, who had just moved to Califoia from Nevada, asked her new roommate to take her to the beach. At Point Fermin, she climbed a 4-foot wall at the park’s edge to get a better view of the ocean, Los Angeles police Sgt. Bradley Hea said.
Somehow, she slipped and fell to her death about 2:15 p.m. She landed on rocks below.
“It was completely accidental,” Hea said.
Coroner’s investigators and Los Angeles police responded.
The woman’s name was not immediately released.
Her death came less that two weeks after two Wilmington residents out on a date were killed when they fell from a cliff at White Point in San Pedro.

Authorities filed charges against a 57-year-old man accused of striking a teen over the head with a metal pole while he was playing Pokemon Go in Long Beach, the Los Angeles County District Attoey’s Office said Friday.
Jayson Louis Lingen has been charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon. He is scheduled to be arraigned at the George Deukmejian Courthouse in Long Beach today, a district attoey press release said.
According to prosecutors, the 17-year-old was playing the augmented reality game Wednesday night, near the Aquarium of the Pacific, when Lingen began yelling at the boy before attacking him with a metal pole.
Authorities were contacted and police took the suspect into custody, prosecutors said, adding that the defendant was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 2013, the release said.
The DA will ask bail to be set at $100,000.

LOS ANGELES — A Metro county sales tax measure aimed at raising revenue to build, operate and maintain public transportation projects was officially certified by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder today for the Nov. 8 ballot.
If approved by at least two-thirds of voters, Measure M would enact a half-cent sales tax hike to fund a package of transportation improvements that include new rail and bus lines, highway improvements and street repairs. The tax revenue would also help fund the operation and maintenance of the regional transportation system.
The measure would build on an existing half-cent tax put in place by voters through Measure R, by boosting that tax to a full cent, and leaving the levy in place with no sunset date. Metro officials estimate the tax would generate $120 billion over the first 40 years.

Long Beach Symphony officials aounced this moing that after a two-year search a new conductor and musical director has been selected.
Maestro Eckart Preu, who closed the season in June with a night of music from the Romantic period as a guest conductor, will take the helm of the orchestra begiing in the 2017-18 season.
“This is a wonderful moment, a very happy moment for me,” said the German-bo conductor during an aouncement luncheon today at the Boathouse on the Bay, which was attended by invited guests that included Symphony board members, musicians and politicians such as Mayor Robert Garcia.
“I’m super excited, or as super excited as a German can get,” Preu joked as the audience of less than 100 people laughed and applauded.

The Blue Cut fire continued to menace communities north of the Cajon Pass on Thursday, but the lifting of some mandatory evacuation orders and the reopening of the 15 Freeway signaled progress against a fast-moving wildfire that shocked even seasoned firefighters with its behavior and ferocity.
The fire has consumed almost 36,000 acres in the San Beardino Mountains as of Thursday evening, but containment rose to 22 percent, up from 4 percent that moing.
U.S. Forest Service spokesman Bob Poole credited the success to finally having enough resources to keep up.

A transgender man who was denied a haircut at a Long Beach barber shop reached a settlement with the business, with management agreeing not to discriminate against patrons based on gender.
Rose Trevis’ Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, filed March 29 against Hawleywood’s Barber Shop, alleged discrimination based on gender and gender identity.
In a settlement reached Tuesday, the business also agreed to pay an unspecified amount to Trevis as well as to her lawyers, compensating them for their work in the case.
According to the lawsuit, Hawleywood’s website describes the shop as a “men’s sanctuary” and includes the statement, “You all know how distracting a woman can be and who wants a straight-razor shave with a buxom blonde in the joint?”
As part of the settlement, Hawleywood’s agreed to halt any potentially discriminatory advertising.

An armed robbery in downtown Long Beach Thursday prompted police to surrounded a parking garage where they thought they had the suspect coered.
The incident started around 12:10 p.m. when the suspect entered a business near the intersection of Pine Avenue and Sixth Street and stole a bottle of liquor, said Long Beach police spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson.
When an employee confronted the suspect, the suspect brandished a firearm, according to Johnson.
After the robbery was reported, police surrounded a nearby public parking structure between Fifth and Sixth streets. Police at the scene said they believed the suspect was inside because of images from a security camera at the garage.
The suspect, however, was able to escape. Police reopened the garage shortly after 1 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing, Johnson said.
Police did not provide a description of the suspect or the firearm used.

A pair of plump penguin chicks, their black-and-white plumage not quite matching the tuxedo look of their adult counterparts, made their public debut Thursday at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.
The birds — both males who have yet to be named — hatched in May. One chick is the offspring of birds known at the aquarium as Kate and Avery, both of whom arrived in Long Beach after they were rescued from the Brazilian coast in 2011. The other chick is the offspring of penguins known as Patsy and Robbie, with the latter also saved from the Brazilian shoreline.
The 20 penguins living at the aquarium’s June Keyes Penguin Habitat are Magellanic penguins, which rarely venture as far north as Brazil. Mandatory evacuation orders for an area of south Hesperia and Oak Hills will be lifted at 1 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department said at 12:45 p.m. Thursday.
The area extends east of the 15 Freeway to Santa Fe and Summit Valley Road and south of Ranchero Road to Highway 138.
The Blue Cut fire has left about 967 customers without power as of noon Thursday, according to Southe Califoia Edison.

The findings of a $100,000 parking study in Belmont Shore will be revealed on Sept. 1 at a meeting with the consultants performing the work.
Third District Councilwoman Suzie Price originally scheduled the public meeting for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bay Shore Community Congregational Church, 5100 The Toledo. But the Plaing Commission study session on the Southeast Area Specific Plan (SEASP) is at 5 p.m. the same night, so the parking meeting has moved to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept 1. It still will be at the Bay Shore church.
The City Council originally requested the parking study in 2014, after the Belmont Shore Parking and Business Improvement Advisory Commission aounced it was considering buying a house next to the Second Street alley for a parking lot. That proposal was dropped.

Uber to use self-driving cars to haul people in next few weeks

DETROIT — Ride-hailing service Uber says it will start hauling passengers with self-driving cars on the streets of Pittsburgh in next several weeks.
The company says the autonomous Ford Fusions will have human backup drivers but will transport passengers just like normal Uber vehicles.
Uber has a self-driving research lab in Pittsburgh and is working on autonomous technology.
Also Thursday, Uber and Volvo aounced a $300 million deal for Volvo to provide SUVs to Uber for autonomous vehicle research. Eventually the Volvo SUVs will be part of the self-driving fleet in Pittsburgh.

Kanye West to open 21 ‘Pablo’ pop-up stores worldwide, and LA is getting one

NEW YORK (AP) — Kanye West fans can buy a taste of “The Life of Pablo” this weekend following the rapper-tued-fashion mogul’s aouncement of 21 pop-up stores worldwide that will be open just this weekend.
West tweeted a map with red dots indicating the stores’ locations Wednesday night. Fourteen of the stores will be in major cities in the U.S.
The pop-up store locations include Los Angeles and San Francisco, according to the map.
